“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me I am a free human being with an independent will.”
When it was first published in October 1847, Jane Eyre was a literary sensation. At times it seemed that the whole of the English-speaking world was reading the novel from the mysterious 'Currer Bell' (Charlotte Bronte). Over a century and a half later, the story still enthralls. It is presented here for the first time with the original illustrations by F. H. Townsend from the 2nd edition of 1847.
“One of the thousand novels everyone must read.” - The Guardian.

This book was excellent. Although it has long been considered a classic of English literature, I had never read it, either in High School or College. I was prompted to read it after seeing an EXCELLENT Masterpiece TV biography of the three Bronte sisters. Considering the very sheltered life they led, I am amazed at the depth of this novel. The sisters managed to create worlds "in their heads" while living in a parsonage in a remote small village in the Yorkshire moors. Amazing. The novel has a very interesting plot which takes a lot of twists and turns. Well worth the read. I found it easy to get immersed in, even considering the 1840s style English prose.Product details

Jane Eyre The Classic Victorian Romance Novel Illustrated edition by Charlotte Bronte Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
One of my favorite all time novels. I must have read this book 20 times over my very long lifetime.
Loved this classic. I didn't read a lot of them in my younger years, so I put them on a bucket list. I was truly pleased with this one. True love wins !!!
To me this is the best of the classics I've had the pleasure of reading so far. I highly recommend it. It is a nice read for lovers of this genre
Loved the book! A great love story!
An awesome read. It is enjoyable with a few life lessons among it's pages. This should be a standard book for every girl or woman. It shows a view of another century-complex characters that show manners and elegance that is almost gone from today's standards. I love this book.
Much more grounded in reality than her sister Emily's work and also a clear devotion to Christianity this novel is a wonderful romance of the period. There is the characteristic Charlotte act 2 stall but the ending makes it all worth it. However, I must say that nothing surpasses Wuthering Heights for me.
Almost a sacred volume, so akin to a parable is this fascinating novel. Brontë through Jane is so descriptive, uses so much realistic detail, you feel as if you were walking through her 17th century world. It's a great read for anyone, but esp to encourage any young lady in her path to live a life of virtue, purity, self-respect, and genuine joy. This volume is so relatable.
Although orphan Jane grows up in a wealthy home, she is treated as an inferior, despised by her supposed "adopted" mother (aunt), unloved and mistreated. However, providence, it would seem, led her to be in a charitable institution of a school away from her cold relatives, where she gains invaluable friends and principles that she will stand firm in for the rest of her life.
She grows to be a very sensible, intellectually-curious, pure, sweet young lady, whose growing mind is continually more opened to the reader. She leaves the aforementioned institution, where she was student, and eventually teacher, to pave a way for herself in the world, hungering for a change, and adventure this she gained- she ends up falling in love with the master of the house.
However, he has a dark secret he refuses to share with her- because he feels it will tear them apart. Nd rightfully so. Jane has so much self-respect, dignity, a heart of integrity and principles, that she is willing rather to follow her head rather than her heart in the heat of the moment- she's willing to give up her one true love to do what is right, honest, and true. Her mind, her expansive mind, her sensitive conscience cannot live a lie.
"I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man. I will hold to the principles received by me when I was sane, and not mad — as I am now. Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigour; stringent are they; inviolate they shall be. If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth? They have a worth — so I have always believed; and if I cannot believe it now, it is because I am insane — quite insane with my veins running fire, and my heart beating faster than I can count its throbs. Preconceived opinions, foregone determinations, are all I have at this hour to stand by there I plant my foot." Ch. 27.
So relatable is she, is this story to the different points in our youth, when we are deciding on who we are, our core values, what will make or break love (deal breakers), and living out religious principles. Just beautiful. Hope this was helpful, and that you enjoy the reading of this book about a thinker, a doer, and how she becomes such an altruist. )
