She thought she was on a new path, but life keeps tugging Addison Lee back to her past and her gift.
Addison struggles to make a new life in Norwich, one where she can be the Battalion Chief of Fire Station Seven and live life as she sees fit. She wants a life without the complications of an ex-fiancé and a job that put her life on the line for little more than a gift she was born with. Learning the ropes of a new job can always be tough, and being a Battalion Chief means she has a great responsibility to her crew and to the city. Nervous about her first day already, Addison realizes that adding in a one-night stand with a future employee has left her on rocky ground.
Plagued by visions of a dying woman, Addison continues to cope with difficulties at her new job. She has no idea who the dying woman is, where she is, or even, when she is—and no means to find out. Addison is distracted from the dying woman and her new job when called to Wyoming on an emergency, where she discovers it’s not as easy to leave her past behind as she hoped.

Full disclosure: I am best friends with this author and there is a character in this book named after me (and I may have cried like a baby when I got to my part!)This book was so much fun. It's one of the first times I've read one of AJ's books without having read most of it as a draft. Reading it as a regular reader was so great. I got to experience the twists and turns as AJ finally decided she wanted the reader to experience them, and I had no idea what to expect! I did know we would get to see Addy and James fall in love, and I was so excited for that. I love them so much and I could not wait for to see how one of my favourite literary couples began! One of the parts I love so much about AJ's style is her lack of setting up a world; she just introduces you to it through the characters. I love that so much. For Addison, gifts are as normal as breathing, and so the reader experiences familiarity/normalcy. You find yourself rereading a sentence going "Did s/he just say/do that?!" As readers, we also deal with some confusion when it comes to the visions Addy has through James, but in time, AJ wraps everything up and it all makes sense. Her style is beautifully unique and this book is a great example of that!

Dying Embers edition by Adrian J Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Actual Rating 3.5
Dying Embers has an interesting, intriguing premise that pulls the reader right into the story. I wasn't completely immersed into Dying Embers, admittedly. I didn't love it, but I appreciated what it was going for. The areas where I was really into it, I couldn't turn away from it. Addison is a character who is easily relatable; she just wants to move swiftly on from her past and start a new, but her past just keeps holding her back. Dying Embers is not only about a woman coping with the past but also about how she accepts it, lives with it, and looks forward to a brighter future. Who can't relate to that?
This in a fast-paced romance adventure of the best kind. The dialog is so natural and the characters are so real that I wonder if I've met them somewhere along the road. It was awesome to learn more details about the special bond Addy and James share, and to explore Addy's roots through this action packed plot. I couldn't put it down, and the second reading was even better than the first.
